Betty, an inebriated woman aimlessly wandering through Parisian bars, stumbles upon a restaurant called 'Le Trou' (The Hole). Here she meets Laure, a middle-aged alcoholic from Lyon who is the lover of Le Trou's owner Mario. Laure takes pity on Betty and brings her to the hotel room next door where she cares for her. While recovering, Betty recounts to Laure the story of her bourgeois life, her unhappy marriage marked by infidelity, and her promiscuous past.
