In 1957, J.C. Cullen leaves his small town for Chicago to pursue a career as a professional gambler, using his talent at craps. He meets George Cole, owner of the Gem Club, and breaks the bank at one of his private games. Cullen falls in love with two women, one of whom is Cole's wife. Despite warnings to stay away from both Coles, Cullen ignores them. In retaliation, Cole bets everything, including the Gem Club, on a final craps game against Cullen.
