Black follows Mavela (Martha Canga Antonio), a 15-year-old girl belonging to Brussels' Black Bronx gang, as she meets Marwan (Aboubakr Bensaihi), a member of a rival Moroccan gang, at a police station. Initially, they resist their attraction due to the gang loyalties but eventually succumb to their feelings. However, when Mavela is reminded of her obligations towards her own gang, she and Marwan decide to rebel against their respective gangs' rules in order to be together. The film moves forward with high energy and realism, featuring scenes of both tenderness and violence.
Black is a contemporary take on a Shakespearean tragedy set against the backdrop of Brussels' street gang culture. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film explores themes of loyalty, love, and rebellion among youth drawn into gang life due to high unemployment rates. It moves at an electrifying pace, reminiscent of films like City of God and Goodfellas, with raw performances by its young leads.
