In 1891, French artist Paul Gauguin feels stifled by the artificiality of Paris and longs for authenticity to inspire his art. Unable to persuade his wife Mette and children to follow him, he decides to journey alone to Tahiti. Upon arrival, Gauguin settles in a remote village called Mataiera, living in a native hut. Over the course of two years, he immerses himself in painting and carving, drawing inspiration from the island's primitive art. Despite facing poverty, heart problems, and other hardships, Gauguin finds joy in his relationship with Tehura, a young native girl.
