The story follows Mickey Scarpato, a lowlife living in the rough neighborhood of God's Pocket in South Philadelphia. When his stepson, Leon, dies under mysterious circumstances during a fight at a construction site, Mickey tries to cover up the truth by staging a car accident. However, things get complicated when a newspaper columnist named Richard Shellhammer starts investigating Leon's death and Leon's mother, Jeannie, becomes suspicious of Mickey's actions.
