In 'Gripsholm', Kurt, a German-Jewish publisher and cabaret star known for his risqué chanson lyrics, flees Nazi Germany with his girlfriend Lydia in the summer of 1932. They travel to Gripsholm castle in Sweden along with their friends, seductive vaudeville singer Billie and passionate fly-boy Karlchen. The holiday takes a dramatic turn as Kurt faces the consequences of his inflammatory articles about the Nazis, leading to changes that none of them could have predicted.
Directed by Xavier Koller in 2000, 'Gripsholm' is an Austrian-German-Swiss drama based on the life and novel Schloss Gripsholm by Kurt Tucholsky. The film transports viewers into the decadent world of Berlin cabaret at the beginning of the 1930s, exploring themes of love, betrayal, and the looming threat of fascism. Though primarily a historical romance drama, 'Gripsholm' also serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of political oppression.
