Argumento

In the winter of 1946, in Leningrad, German prisoners of war arrive at a female transit camp run by vengeful Russian guards, led by Commander Pavlov. Among them are Dr. Natalia (Vera Farmiga), who treats the prisoners with dignity despite her role as a guard, and two prisoners, Max and Klaus. Natalia has an agreement with Pavlov to keep her former lover, who is mentally slow, in the camp instead of sending him to Siberia. Natalia's task is to identify members of the SS infiltrated among the prisoners. Meanwhile, Max and Natalia feel drawn to each other while Klaus tries to manipulate Max into betraying fellow prisoners. Natalia convinces businessman Yakov to organize an orchestra with the prisoners for a dance at a ball. Afterward, Natalia arranges for the prisoners to spend the night with the women attendees. She spends a night with Max but is forced to reveal his innocence when he's attacked by Klaus, who is revealed to be an SS officer.
