In late 19th-century England, Jude (played by Craig McLachlan) aspires to attend university in Christminster but feels trapped due to his blue-collar background as a stonemason and his loveless marriage to Arabella (Rachel Griffiths). When Arabella leaves him, Jude sees an opportunity for change. He moves to the city, where he meets and falls in love with Sue (Kate Winslet), his intelligent and beautiful cousin who is initially married to another man. Despite their growing feelings, tragedy strikes when Sue discovers Jude's previous marriage, leading her to marry another man out of spite. Heartbroken, Jude returns home but eventually reconnects with Sue at their aunt's funeral. They begin an illicit affair until Sue's husband steps aside, allowing them to live together openly and have children. However, their happiness is short-lived as tragedy strikes once again.
Based on Thomas Hardy's novel 'Jude the Obscure', this 1996 film directed by Michael Winterbottom explores themes of social class, forbidden love, and personal struggle in late 19th-century Victorian England. Jude's aspirations for education are hindered by his humble beginnings, while his complex relationship with Sue brings both joy and despair. The film delves into the harsh realities of societal norms and expectations, showcasing the consequences of defying them.
