In late 19th century England, Charlie, a young aristocrat, encounters Frank on his journey to Portsmouth. Unknown to Charlie, Frank is actually Frances, disguised as a boy to flee from her life in a brothel. Charlie brings Frank/Frances home and eventually discovers her true identity when she reveals herself while they bathe together. Despite this revelation, the two begin a romantic relationship. Charlie then sends Frances to London to be trained by his mistress in the art of sex, but during her stay there, she learns much more about her own womanhood.
