In the desolate coastal region of Veracruz, Mexico, a 17-year-old boy named Sebastián takes over managing his uncle's small, hourly-rate motel. He spends much of his time alone until he meets Miranda, a frequent customer who visits to meet her lover who always keeps her waiting. With plenty of time on their hands while Miranda waits for her paramour, Sebastián and Miranda start spending time together, engaging in an ambiguous dance of seduction.
Set against the backdrop of the desolate Mexican coastline, 'Las horas muertas' (2013) is a poignant drama about loneliness, longing, and the fleeting nature of human connection. Directed by Aarón Fernández Lesur, the film centers on Sebastián, a teenage boy tasked with running his uncle's modest motel in Veracruz. The motel serves as a haven for clandestine affairs, including those of Miranda, a woman who regularly visits to meet her lover who consistently leaves her waiting. As Sebastián and Miranda find themselves spending more time together due to Miranda's lover's habitual tardiness, an ambiguous relationship begins to bloom between them. The film explores themes of unrequited love, missed opportunities, and the transient nature of life, as embodied by the motel's clientele and its temporary inhabitants.
