In early 20th-century Montana, Col. William Ludlow lives on a ranch with his three sons, Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. The family is bound by loyalty and love, but their lives are tested when World War I breaks out. Tristan, the youngest and most impetuous son, enlists in the U.S. Army despite his father's disapproval. During the war, Tristan becomes a hero but also suffers from PTSD after experiencing traumatic events.
Upon returning home, Tristan falls in love with Susannah, an Indian woman who is engaged to Alfred. This love triangle causes friction within the family, leading eventually to tragedy. The brothers' sibling rivalry and loyalty are tested by their feelings for Susannah and their differing views on how to handle their father's declining health.
Legends of the Fall (1994) is a drama film directed by Edward Zwick based loosely on characters from 'The Chosen Country,' a novel by William W. Johnstone. The movie follows the Ludlow family across several decades in Montana, focusing on the brothers' relationships and the trials they face due to war, love triangles, and family dynamics. Set against beautiful landscapes, the film explores themes of loyalty, sibling rivalry, tragedy, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It features notable performances by Brad Pitt as Tristan Ludlow, Anthony Hopkins as Col. William Ludlow, and Aidan Quinn as Alfred Ludlow.
