The lives of Sarah Pierce, a stay-at-home mother married to an advertising executive, and Brad Adamson, an immature househusband married to a documentary filmmaker, intersect at their suburban neighborhood's pool. They begin an affair, finding adult companionship amidst their otherwise monotonous lives. Meanwhile, Registered sex offender Ronnie McGorvey, recently released from prison after serving time for indecent exposure to a minor, moves back into his elderly mother May's house next door to the Adamson family. Ex-police officer Larry Hedges, now retired and disgraced due to corruption, becomes obsessed with driving Ronnie away, believing him to be a threat to the neighborhood's children despite his claims of reform. As Sarah and Brad's affair continues, they struggle with their guilt and the potential consequences if their spouses were to find out. Ronnie, feeling pressure from both Larry's harassment and his mother's desire for him to settle down with a girlfriend, becomes increasingly unstable. The tension reaches a boiling point when Larry confesses his misdeeds to Sarah while drunk at a neighbor's party, causing her to reevaluate her own actions and leading to a confrontation between Ronnie and Brad that ends in tragedy.
Little Children (2006), directed by Todd Field and based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, is a psychological drama set amidst the seemingly perfect suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. The film explores themes of adultery, pedophilia, and small-town prejudice through its interconnected characters: Sarah Pierce, Brad Adamson, Ronnie McGorvey, and Larry Hedges. With its dark humor and biting social commentary, Little Children offers a critical examination of the bourgeoisie's illusion of wholesomeness and the dangerous undercurrents that lie beneath their seemingly perfect facade.
