Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien from a dying planet, arrives on Earth in search of water to save his home world. He uses his advanced knowledge to create profitable inventions with the help of lawyer Oliver Farnsworth. During this time, Thomas meets Mary-Lou, a hotel clerk, and begins to fall in love with her. Just as he is ready to leave Earth after amassing enough funds to build a return spacecraft, he is intercepted by the U.S. government, threatening his entire plan.
