Argumento
In 1856, Alexina Barbin arrives in a coastal village in La Rochelle to teach young girls, having lived previously with nuns at an orphanage school. Deeply religious and mysterious about her gender, Alexina shares a classroom and bedroom with the lively Sara, whom she falls in love with. Their relationship evolves into a scandalous affair. Seeking marriage and social acceptance, Alexina confides her secrets to various authority figures including the village priest, her mother, the bishop, and the bishop's physician.
