After serving two years in prison for accepting a bribe—a charge he maintains was false—former newspaper reporter Harry Barber is released, harboring bitterness and a desire for revenge. He takes on a job arranged by Mrs. Malroux to stage the kidnapping of her stepdaughter, the daughter of a dying millionaire. The plan is for Barber to demand ransom money from the girl's father while Mrs. Malroux keeps him in the dark about her true intentions. However, as events unfold, Barber realizes that he has been set up and that everyone involved seems to have their own agenda. He must navigate this web of deception and uncover the truth before it lands him back in prison or worse.
‘Palmetto’ is a neo-noir thriller directed by Volker Schlöndorff in 1998, based on the novel ‘The Big Get Lost’ by David Goodis. The film follows Harry Barber (played by Woody Harrelson), a disgraced newspaper reporter who is framed for accepting a bribe and spends two years in prison. Upon his release, he becomes entangled in a complex kidnapping scheme orchestrated by Mrs. Malroux (Elisabeth Shue). The story explores themes of revenge, deception, and the lengths people will go to for money and power.
