Pompéi follows Victor (Aliocha Schneider), a young boy who lives with his younger brother Jimmy in the shadow of the ancient city of Pompeii. After their father's desertion, Victor takes care of Jimmy while they scrape by through theft, under the guidance of Toxou (Vincent Rottiers) and other vagrant children. The community is isolated and follows strange rules, with no mention of love or care. Billie (Garance Marillier) arrives, awakening feelings in Victor but also threatening their way of life. As tensions rise between loyalty to his group and love for Billie, Jimmy eagerly awaits his 13th birthday, which will mark a barbaric coming-of-age ritual for all the children. Time is running out as an hourglass is turned over.
Pompéi (2019) is a drama film directed by Anna Falguères and John Shank. Set in the desolate environment around the ancient city of Pompeii, the story revolves around Victor, a boy left to care for his younger brother after their father's abandonment. The brothers are part of a community of vagrant children led by Toxou, living under strict rules and devoid of love or intimacy. When Billie arrives, she brings romanticism that threatens their isolated existence. The film explores themes of loyalty, love, and the struggle between personal feelings and community bonds. The countdown to Jimmy's coming-of-age ritual adds urgency to Victor's choices.
