On Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, several strangers' lives intersect dramatically. Velvet Larry, owner of a strip club called 'Powder Blue', has his world turned upside down when Rose Johnny, one of his dancers and a single mother, suffers an anxiety attack on stage during a lap dance for Randall, the head of a corporate crime organization. Meanwhile, Qwerty Doolittle, a shy young mortician, becomes infatuated with Rose after he visits the club to fulfill a kite-flying promise to his late grandmother. Charlie, a suicidally depressed former priest, arrives at Powder Blue seeking solace after attempting suicide in a nearby church but surviving due to divine intervention. Lexus, a lonely transsexual prostitute, also ends up at the club and finds an unexpected bond with Charlie over their shared loneliness and despair.
Powder Blue (2009) is an indie drama directed by Timothy Linh Bui, set amidst the gritty streets of Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. The film explores themes of connection, redemption, and desperation as it weaves together the stories of four individuals whose lives collide through chance encounters, tragedy, and divine intervention. While the plot sources provide varying degrees of detail, they agree that Powder Blue centers around the intersecting narratives of characters drawn to a seedy strip club called 'Powder Blue'. The film tackles politically incorrect themes such as transgender identity (Lexus), mental health struggles (Charlie), and the harsh realities of life for those marginalized by society.
