In Portugal during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813, a group of deserters led by Sharpe's old enemy, Obadiah Hakeswill, capture two women and hold them hostage for ransom. One of the captives is the wife of an English high-ranking officer. Major Sharpe is tasked with rescuing the women along with his 60th Rifles regiment and a Rocket troop. However, he must not only confront his old nemesis but also contend with a new threat in the form of French Major Pierre Ducos.
