Under the Skin follows Iris (Samantha Morton), the younger sister of Rose (Jane Wood), who has always been their mother's favorite despite being married and pregnant herself. After their mother's death, Iris struggles to cope with her loss and spirals into a self-destructive pattern of sexual promiscuity. She leaves her steady boyfriend Gary for a series of one-night stands with strangers, alienating those around her including Gary, Rose, her friends, and employers. As Iris continues down this path, it appears that she may lose everything meaningful to her.
Under the Skin is a 1997 British drama directed by Carine Adler. The film explores themes of grief, identity, and self-destruction through the lens of its protagonist, Iris. Although married sisters Rose and Iris share a close bond, it is Iris who struggles most with their mother's death, leading her to engage in reckless sexual behavior as a coping mechanism. The movie offers a candid portrayal of female sexuality and its complexities, challenging societal norms and expectations.
