In Germany during the 1970s, Franz, a young student, meets Léopold, a 50-year-old businessman. They have a sexual encounter at Léopold's apartment, where Léopold encourages Franz to share his past homosexual experiences. Six months later, Franz has moved in with Léopold and they appear to live as an ordinary married couple. However, tensions arise between them when Franz threatens to leave after an argument. While Léopold is away, Franz's former girlfriend Anna visits him, and their relationship rekindles. Before they can flee together, Léopold returns and persuades Anna to stay. Soon after, Léopold's ex-lover Vera arrives, adding another complication to the situation.
