Set in 1327, the story follows the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and his young novice, Adson of Melk, as they arrive at a remote Benedictine abbey in northern Italy for a high-stakes theological debate. However, the mission quickly shifts when the abbot asks William to investigate the mysterious death of a talented young monk. As more monks are found dead in increasingly macabre ways—reminiscent of the Book of Revelation—William uses his sharp powers of logic and observation to navigate a web of secrets, forbidden knowledge, and religious fanaticism.
