Historia

In Elizabethan England, struggling playwright William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is commissioned by theatre impresario Philip Henslowe to write a new comedy. However, Shakespeare is beset by writer's block and has not begun his play, titled 'Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter'. Meanwhile, Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), a noblewoman passionate about acting but forbidden from doing so due to her gender, disguises herself as a man named Thomas Kent to audition for Shakespeare's play. Captivated by her talent and beauty, Shakespeare falls in love with 'Thomas' while Viola, secretly admiring Shakespeare's work, reciprocates his affection. As they rehearse the play, their forbidden love affair inspires Shakespeare to transform his comedy into a tragedy, ultimately renaming it 'Romeo and Juliet'. However, their relationship becomes complicated when Viola is betrothed to Lord Wessex (Colin Firth) and Shakespeare's wife Anne (Kate Winslet) returns from her travels.
