Camille, a professor at a Protestant college engaged to Martin, another professor and respected minister, feels stirrings of uncertainty about her life when she meets Petra, an acrobat in a circus troupe. Camille is drawn to Petra's free spirit despite their different worlds. After the death of her dog, Camille begins to question her relationship with Martin, realizing that her love for him may not be as deep as she thought. She and Petra meet again, and they spend a night together at the circus where Petra performs. When Martin finds out about this, he's shocked and argues with Camille. Distraught, Camille goes to bury her dog in the snow and ends up falling asleep.
Directed by Patricia Rozema, 'When Night Is Falling' (1995) is a Canadian drama that explores themes of self-discovery, love, and sexuality within the context of conservative religious academia. The film focuses on Camille, a professor at a Christian college engaged to Martin, who finds herself drawn to Petra, a free-spirited performer in a circus troupe. While the sources vary slightly in their details, they collectively paint a picture of Camille's journey of self-discovery as she grapples with her feelings for Petra and the potential consequences on her relationship with Martin.
